The play was inspired by a TV documentary seen by Ronald Harwood 25 years ago. It was about Verdi who left legacy a building in Milan for opera singers. “Each year, on Verdi's birthday, these old singers used to organize a gala in which they performed, it was terrible, very moving”, Harwood recollects. Thus the play was born.Three times nominated for Oscar for the best screenplay, Ronald Harwood won this award for The Pianist.
